ARTIST STATEMENT This work is Divinely given. Through this work, I have been connected with something more than what can be seen with the physical eye. It deals with the metaphysical, beyond physical, into the spiritual, mystical realm.
The gift of black walnut wood, from a tree that was cut down nearby, began the exploration of a new way of working that served to broaden my awareness of God within the creative process, uncovering layer upon layer of my thought, often hidden even from myself. Sculpting in wood was a familiar experience that corresponded with woodcut printmaking I had done during graduate school, where a new technique, woodcut collage, was revealed to me after asking for assistance through prayer. At the time I didn’t know where this technique came from, but I knew that it was more than my own conscious thought bringing it through. I had connected on an intuitive level to something unseen and simply moved with the spontaneity in the moment, letting the wood grain seemingly “speak to me.” It allowed me the freedom to move beyond the traditional woodcut and create life-size, one-of-a-kind figures that represented the spirit within all of us.
In the sculpture, I am shown what shape the form will take as I move in direct alignment with a Higher Knower. As the form changes, as more and more wood is chipped away, I begin to see and think differently, learning whatever it is I am to learn in the moment through telepathic awareness. I have been blessed with an understanding of Higher Wisdom coming into the world through direct contact with a Guru who assists in unblocking incorrect thoughts that would deny the existence of a Higher Force. Through this artistic process, I allow God to speak while I follow, to the best of my ability, His direction. In this way I am taught about myself, about life and about the human experience as I co-create with the Creator. The result is the work you see before you.
We are all awakening into a new era. It is hoped that this work will assist in that awakening. Namaskar (The Divinity in me salutes the Divinity in you.)
