ARTIST'S STATEMENT It’s not canvas, wood or clay… It’s not paper, pencil, paints or brushes… It’s not academic knowledge either that allows the magic from which this work becomes actual. My art comes from my heart, from my soul - from love. The work is a vision of liberty expressed through intense colors and movements. I let my roots from Brazil, my Amazon appear. These are my dreams for mother nature, humanity and life. My art is the essence that lets me breathe, that makes me a real person.
BIO Alcinda Saphira, was born in the city of Belem in Brazil. She remains deeply attached to her native country and its influence informs every aspect of her paintings and sculpture today.
Her formal art education began at the Escola De Belas Artes Federal Da Bahia in Salvador, Bahia. After leaving her job as a television and radio producer at TV educative da Bahia and transferring to TV Cultura Do Para, the public broadcasting service in her home region, she sought out the traditional potters in that part of the Amazon. For many years she traveled from one small town to another, studying ancient techniques while sharing back lessons learned at the academy. This became a crucial period in developing the visceral and political commitment to the survival of the Amazon that largely defined the shapes, colors, texture and themes of her work.
Alcinda Saphira is currently working with abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvas with paper mache and other natural objects. She is also doing body painting as studio fashion performance. She now resides in Hastings, NY and maintains her studio in the neighboring Irvington, Westchester, N.Y. She received the Silver Medal for art in UBENY’s 2002 International competition. Her works are being shown in the U.S.A and Brazil.
