    BIO
    Born 1944, High River, Canada
    Lives in Riverdale, NY

Long time Riverdale resident and award winning watercolor landscape artist, Ruth Hurd was born in High River, Alberta, Canada. Ruth moved across Canada and then south to the US, finally settling in New York. Successful as a Publisher in business, Ruth didn’t start painting watercolors until ten years ago when a business acquaintance suggested she give it a try.

Since then, Ruth has studied with Dale Meyers and Fred Wong at the Art Students League in Manhattan and has exhibited at the Art Students League, Salmagundi Club, The National Arts Club, Ethical Culture Society (Artist of the Month), Upstream Gallery (Dobbs Ferry, NY), St. Francis College, Riverdale Library, and Sterling Glen of Forest Hills.

Ruth has won awards at the last two Annual Shows at the Vintage Artists Gallery (Finney Farm won First Place Watercolor in 2008 and Mourning Dove won Second Place Watercolor in 2009). Ruth’s paintings also have won awards at the Art Students League (Apples of My Eye won Best in Class), the Bronxville Library (Mayan Riviera won Third Place Watercolor), and the Will Library in Yonkers (Seen Better Days won First Place Watercolor). Ruth’s winter scene, Snow Spikes, was used by Wave Hill in its flyer, “Celebrate the Holidays at Wave Hill” and her watercolors have appeared in the just released film, Beautiful Days.

Ruth’s landscapes explore the enormous beauty of vast landscapes and skies and the more precise beauty of smaller, more human-scaled subjects. She is drawn to subjects that are vulnerable, buildings that have seen better days, animals and landscapes that are endangered. Painting is Ruth’s personal way of remembering and paying homage to what is fleeting and ephemeral.

Ruth is a Member of the Art Students League, The Eleven Hundred Watercolor Society (www.1100watercolor.org), and the Riverdale Art Association (www.RiverdaleArtAssociation.org) where she is the Member Chair.

Additional paintings can be seen on Ruth’s website: www.RuthHurd.com.
